چکیده

Vachellia karroo (Hayne) Banfi & Galasso (formerly Acacia karroo) is the most widespread tree in southern Africa, and exhibits wide morphological variation such that phenotypes have been considered as separate species. We sought to determine whether local adaptation was occurring two neighboring populations (ca. 15 km apart) South Africa show tremendous size adults. examined seedling sapling performance of genotypes grown reciprocal environments differ climatic edaphic conditions. used a field transplant experiment at Richards Bay Empangeni, complemented this with common garden study. measured total height, stem diameter, thorn length, leaf area, weight, plant aboveground dry weight specific area after 4 months 16 for field-grown plants, respectively. For greenhouse-grown root also measured. Phenotypes seedlings saplings from maintained their differences greenhouse field. Greenhouse-grown plants showed lower proportional allocation than Empangeni (i.e. mass fraction: 0.20 ± 0.01 vs 0.60 0.02). In field, there were significant genotype-by-environment interactions seven traits reciprocally-transplanted populations. found limited evidence attributed Local evident (leaf weight) interaction. These clearly important fitness consequences photosynthesis. However, one population grew taller had longer thorns both sites. conclude magnitude divergent selection relatively low may be accompanied by processes genetic drift, leading differentiation.

Habitat fragmentation and adaptation: a reciprocal replant–transplant experiment among 15 populations of Lychnis flos-cuculi

1. Habitat fragmentation and variation in habitat quality can both affect plant performance, but their effects have rarely been studied in combination. We thus examined plant performance in response to differences in habitat quality for a species subject to habitat fragmentation, the common but declining perennial herb Lychnis flos-cuculi. 2. We reciprocally transplanted plants between 15 fen g...

Measuring microbial fitness in a field reciprocal transplant experiment.

Microbial fitness is easy to measure in the laboratory, but difficult to measure in the field. Laboratory fitness assays make use of controlled conditions and genetically modified organisms, neither of which are available in the field. Among other applications, fitness assays can help researchers detect adaptation to different habitats or locations. We designed a competitive fitness assay to de...

From Local Adaptation to Ecological Speciation in Copepod Populations from Neighboring Lakes

Continental copepods have been derived from several independent invasive events from the sea, but the subsequent evolutionary processes that account for the current diversity in lacustrine environments are virtually unknown. Salinity is highly variable among lakes and constitutes a source of divergent selection driving potential reproductive isolation. We studied four populations of the calanoi...

Mycorrhizal Symbiosis and Local Adaptation in Aster amellus: A Field Transplant Experiment

Many plant populations have adapted to local soil conditions. However, the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is often overlooked in this context. Only a few studies have used reciprocal transplant experiments to study the relationships between soil conditions, mycorrhizal colonisation and plant growth. Furthermore, most of the studies were conducted under controlled greenhouse conditions. Ho...

Modeling intraspecific adaptation of Abies sachalinensis to local altitude and responses to global warming, based on a 36-year reciprocal transplant experiment

Intraspecific adaptation in Abies sachalinensis was examined using models based on long-term monitoring data gathered during a reciprocal transplant experiment with eight seed source populations and six transplantation sites along an altitudinal gradient. The consequence of local adaptation was evaluated by testing the home-site advantage for upslope and downslope transplants at five ages. The ...
